Sustainability
We are solar powered! In addition to the herb and greens garden (coming in 2017), our rooftop features a locally made solar power system. The two-part system, which includes panels and inverters, was made by Bellingham manufacturer Itek Energy and installed by Fire Mountain Solar. A total of 62 Itek Energy 285 watt panels were installed on the roof, which represents 17.67 kilowatts of energy. The System is expected to generate 16,080 KWH of power a year, but the actual output will vary slightly based upon the weather and amount of sunshine. To put those figures in perspective, our system is about twice the size of the average residential solar power system. This system would power one electric-powered residence for a year, or three residences with natural gas for heat. C▪SQUARE (through the Skagit Valley Food Co-op) was awarded a $19,996 USDA grant for its solar system. The award represents 25% of the cost of the installation, which is the most that can be awarded for a grant alone.
